Tom came in thinking chiropractic was just for back pain. But his actual problem was a shoulder that wouldn't move right, which was affecting his whole arm. Turns out, the issue wasn't his shoulder — it was his neck and upper back. Once we addressed those segments, his shoulder freed up.
People are often surprised by what chiropractors treat. Here's the reality.
What We Treat: The Real List
Chiropractors treat movement dysfunction and joint restriction, particularly in the spine and extremities. Here's what that means in practice:
Spine and back:
- Low back pain and dysfunction
- Neck pain and stiffness
- Mid-back and thoracic pain
- Sciatica and radiating leg pain
- Disc-related issues
- Postural dysfunction
Extremities and joints:
- Shoulder and rotator cuff issues
- Elbow and wrist pain
- Knee and ankle pain
- Hip pain
- Foot problems
- General joint pain
Specific problems:
- Sports injuries
- Car accident injuries (whiplash, etc.)
- Work-related injuries
- Repetitive strain injuries
- Arthritis and joint degeneration
- Muscle strains and sprains
- Headaches (especially cervicogenic)
- Movement dysfunction and poor mechanics
Why Specific Assessment Matters
Here's the key: the same symptom can have completely different causes. Two people with "low back pain" might need totally different treatments.
One person might have restricted motion in their lumbar spine. Another might have hip tightness creating compensation. A third might have weak core muscles letting their spine shift wrong.
That's why I do a thorough assessment. I'm looking for the specific tissue that's causing the problem so I can address it specifically.
What We Don't Treat
It's also important to know what chiropractic doesn't address:
- Acute fractures: You need a hospital and orthopedic care first
- Active infections: Antibiotics and medical care take priority
- Organ dysfunction: Heart disease, diabetes, and other internal issues need appropriate medical care
- Severe neurological conditions: Some conditions need neurology specialists
- Cancer: While I can provide supportive care, you need oncology
If you have one of these conditions, I'll be honest and refer you to the right provider. Your health comes first.
Will Chiropractic Help Your Specific Issue?
The honest answer: probably, but I won't know until I assess you.
That's why the first visit is crucial. I assess your condition, understand what's going on, and tell you:
- Whether I can help
- What treatment would look like
- How long it might take
- Whether you might benefit from other care too
I never want to waste your time or money treating something that isn't my specialty.
A Note About Chronic Conditions
If you have chronic pain or long-standing dysfunction, chiropractic can help. But "help" might mean:
- Reducing pain and improving function (not necessarily eliminating it completely)
- Improving quality of life
- Reducing medication dependence (sometimes)
- Teaching you how to manage it long-term
I'm honest about expectations. Some conditions improve dramatically; others improve gradually. Some people get off medication; others reduce it. The goal is always to maximize function and quality of life.
Your Condition Questions
Q: I've had [condition] for years. Can chiropractic help?
A: Schedule a consultation. I'll examine you and give you an honest assessment.
Q: My doctor said nothing can help. Can chiropractic?
A: Maybe. Sometimes a different approach finds what others missed. Worth exploring.
Q: Will my condition require ongoing treatment?
A: Depends. Some resolve with a few visits. Others benefit from maintenance care. I'll be clear about what to expect.
Q: Can you treat this alongside my other healthcare?
A: Yes. I collaborate with your doctor, PT, or other providers.
